# APIGA’s 10-year mark puts Asia-Pacific internet governance talent into focus

[ICANN said APIGA has reached a decade of preparing youth leaders](https://www.prnewswire.co.uk/news-releases/apiga-celebrates-10-years-of-developing-the-next-generation-of-internet-leaders-302834089.html?ref=southeastasiaconnect.com) for internet-governance work, putting a talent-pipeline issue behind Asia-Pacific digital growth into view.

The Asia Pacific Internet Governance Academy is co-hosted by ICANN and the Korea Internet & Security Agency, with support from regional internet organisations. ICANN said the programme has involved more than 359 participants from 32 economies since launch.

The milestone is useful because internet governance is often treated as background infrastructure. In practice, the region needs people who can work across technical standards, domain-name governance, cybersecurity norms, public policy and multistakeholder decision-making.

APIGA’s expansion into local editions also matters. ICANN said local APIGA programmes began in 2024 and have expanded to ten economies within two years. That suggests demand for internet-governance skills is becoming more distributed rather than concentrated around regional events.

For companies and institutions operating across Southeast Asia, the relevance is practical. Digital-policy outcomes shape trust, data flows, online identity, security expectations and the resilience of public digital services. Talent development is one way the region builds capacity before policy conflicts become operational risks.

The next useful signal is whether APIGA alumni move into visible roles across regulators, network operators, civil society, academia or digital-economy companies. That would show whether the programme is building a durable governance bench across the region.
