DayOne Data Centers and TNB Power Generation signed a memorandum of understanding in Kuala Lumpur on 7 August to explore a dedicated on-site power-generation solution of up to 1.5 GW for a proposed DayOne data-centre development in Selangor. This is a dated analysis of the 1 September announcement, not a new 22 September development.
The announcement matters because it frames power supply as part of the site-design question rather than a later utility connection. DayOne says the work may combine dedicated generation with battery energy storage and is intended to support large-scale data-centre demand and future AI infrastructure. The company is already present in Johor and describes the Selangor development as an expansion of its Greater Kuala Lumpur footprint.
There is an important limit. The companies have not announced a final plant design, an agreed capacity, a delivery model, a construction schedule or a regulatory approval. DayOne says each remains subject to feasibility assessments, definitive agreements and applicable approvals. Readers should therefore treat the 1.5 GW figure as the upper bound being assessed, not as capacity already contracted or under construction.
For buyers, utilities and investors, the useful signal is the attempt to align digital-load growth with a dedicated energy and storage plan. Whether that becomes a delivered project will depend on the technical study, the commercial structure, grid and regulatory outcomes, and the final mix of generation and storage.
