# Jakarta says LRT extension is 97.99% complete

Jakarta says the Velodrome-Manggarai light-rail extension has reached 97.99% readiness. The 12.2km route adds 11 stations and is intended to connect more eastern neighbourhoods with the capital’s wider public-transport network.

## What happened

Governor Pramono Anung gave the readiness figure on 13 August, while project company Jakpro has scheduled initial operation for 26 August. The route is not yet open to passengers. The reported investment is Rp12.1 trillion, and final testing and safety approval remain necessary before service begins. ## Why it matters

The material change is that a large urban-transport project has moved into its final delivery stage. If the extension opens safely, it can shorten transfers and make rail a practical option for more daily journeys between residential and commercial areas.

For Jakarta’s innovation economy, reliable mass transit supports labour mobility and reduces the cost of reaching jobs and services. The benefit depends on dependable frequency, integrated fares and convenient links to buses and other rail lines, not only the completion of physical infrastructure.

## The final test is safe passenger service

The decisive evidence will be safety clearance, the actual start of passenger service, operating frequency, interchange performance and sustained ridership after the launch period. Jakarta will also need to publish clear service information so passengers know when trains run, how fares connect with other modes and whether lifts, walkways and station access work reliably for everyday journeys.
