The [Johor state government](https://www.johor.gov.my/?ref=southeastasiaconnect.com) is targeting about 5GW of additional solar generation by 2030 or 2031, state official Lee Ting Han said on 25 October, as it plans for growing data-centre and industrial electricity demand. The target identifies where the state expects future supply to come from, but it is not an award or a measure of power already available.

Lee, Johor's state executive councillor for investment and trade, outlined solar projects totalling 4GW in Kota Tinggi and Mersing, with phases expected to begin from mid-2029\. A further 1GW is envisaged for Segamat. The figures and timing were reported by [Bernama on 25 October](https://www.bernamabiz.com/news.php?id=2625363&ref=southeastasiaconnect.com) as parts of the state's longer-term solar plan.

The planning signal follows a sharp rise in expected electricity use by data centres. Lee said 21 data centres had begun operating among 65 projects approved on the basis of land plots. He put the expected consumption of those operating centres at nearly 1.1GW, while centres still under construction or in planning could require another 4GW to 5GW. Those demand figures describe different stages of development; they do not show that Johor has installed the proposed solar capacity.

For renewable-power developers and suppliers, the named areas and mid-2029 phasing offer a more specific horizon than a statewide capacity ambition alone. Data-centre developers and industrial occupiers can also use the target to test their future power assumptions. They cannot yet treat the 5GW as contracted supply: the report does not establish individual solar awards, financing, power-purchase agreements or commissioning dates.

Lee said Johor is also examining electricity demand through its state data-centre development coordination committee, which reviews proposals before local planning applications. He described solar expansion alongside broader state and federal efforts to add generation capacity and the option for large data centres to explore off-grid power under applicable rules. Those measures show the scale of the supply challenge, but each would need its own approvals and implementation before it could serve a particular customer.
