[Universal Quantum](https://universalquantum.com/?ref=southeastasiaconnect.com) has secured more than US$100 million in Series A funding, with Singapore's EDBI among the investors. The UK quantum-computing company says the capital will support its previously announced Singapore R&D centre, which is being established, according to [investor Nauta's 8 October announcement](https://www.nautacapital.co/news-insights/universal-quantum-100m-series-a?ref=southeastasiaconnect.com). For regional researchers and specialist suppliers, the completed financing makes the planned centre a more concrete partnership prospect.

## Why the hardware approach matters

Universal Quantum is developing computers assembled from connected quantum chips. Its approach uses trapped ions, charged atoms held by electric fields, as qubits that store quantum information. Linking smaller modules is intended to build more capable systems without relying on a single very large processor. Nauta says the new capital will support development and commercialisation of the chips, their connections and control systems.

As evidence of the company's work beyond a research concept, Nauta says Universal Quantum is delivering against a contract it values at $77 million with the German Aerospace Center and employs more than 100 technical staff. Those existing activities give prospective Singapore partners specific engineering experience to examine when assessing how the proposed R&D centre could fit into the wider programme.

The round was co-led by DCVC and Firgun Ventures, with EDBI and other investors participating, Nauta said. The investor also described expansion plans in the United States, Japan and Germany. It did not disclose EDBI's contribution or a Singapore-specific allocation, so the full US$100 million-plus should not be presented as local investment.

## Singapore's next research link

Nauta says the Singapore centre would be Universal Quantum's first R&D site outside Europe. That places Singapore within the company's international engineering plans rather than simply on its investor list. A Singapore research group or component supplier can now track the centre's establishment and identify the relevant team and collaboration route before committing partnership resources. The source gives a funded plan, while the practical terms of local engagement will become clear through the company's subsequent site and partner updates.
