A power bank caught fire aboard a Batik Air flight from Makassar to Jakarta on Thursday, according to Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport authority official Taufan Yudhistira. He said the incident occurred on Batik Air flight ID 6143 from Sultan Hasanuddin Airport to Soekarno-Hatta Airport, the situation was brought under control, and the flight continued normally and arrived safely.
Yudhistira said the airline’s aviation security team reported the incident to Soekarno-Hatta airport authorities, and the passenger who brought the power bank was handed over to airport authorities for questioning.
A preliminary investigation found the power bank had a capacity of 37 watt-hours, which was within the permitted limit for carry-on luggage. The report said Transportation Ministry regulations allow power banks below 100 Wh onboard, require airline approval at check-in for units between 100 and 160 Wh, and prohibit those above 160 Wh. The rules also require power banks to be carried in cabin baggage, prohibit their use during flights, and limit each passenger to two power banks.
