Trinasolar has been selected to supply high-power solar modules for the Dầu Tiếng 5 floating solar and storage project in Tây Ninh Province, adding a named equipment supplier as one of Vietnam's largest renewable-energy developments moves into construction.
The company said in a 9 September release distributed by PR Newswire that it will provide 730 to 735W Vertex N n-type i-TOPCon modules for a 562MWdc array designed around 450MWac of generating capacity. Those omissions matter for readers tracking execution rather than announcement volume. The project has already passed several visible milestones: developer DT5.1 Energy broke ground on 4 August and signed an engineering, procurement and construction contract later that month with a consortium of PowerChina, Sigma Engineering and Hoàng Liên Sơn. A large project with a 2027 target
DT5.1 Energy, a member of Xuân Cầu Holdings, is developing Dầu Tiếng 5 across roughly 645 hectares in a semi-submerged area of Dầu Tiếng Reservoir. The project owner's August announcement gives the plant a 450MW rating and says it is expected to produce about 808GWh of electricity a year after entering commercial operation in December 2027.
A later XCE Energy update describes 562.5MWp of installed solar capacity, alongside distributed inverters, battery energy storage and grid-connection infrastructure. The battery's capacity has not been disclosed publicly, so the storage element should not yet be treated as a quantified operating asset.
The 562MWdc and 450MWac figures describe different sides of the same project rather than competing estimates: direct-current module capacity is higher than the alternating-current rating at which the plant will deliver power. The 808GWh figure is a forecast, not measured generation.
The DPPA signal needs careful reading
Xuân Cầu has described Dầu Tiếng 5 as one of the first projects applying Vietnam's direct power purchase agreement mechanism. Under a DPPA, renewable generators can sell electricity to large users rather than relying only on the conventional utility-buyer route. Vietnam Government News
Vietnam Government News identifies a separate arrangement between the TTC Đức Huệ 2 solar plant and Samsung Electronics Vietnam Thai Nguyen as the first renewable generator and large electricity user operating under the grid-connected DPPA mechanism, from 1 June 2026.
For Dầu Tiếng 5, the commercial details needed to judge the power-sale arrangement remain absent: no buyer, contracted volume, tariff or agreement term was named in the supplier release or project-owner material reviewed by SEA Connect. The useful near-term signals will therefore be module-delivery evidence, progress against the EPC schedule, disclosure of the storage configuration and confirmation of the eventual off-taker structure.
What operators should watch
The immediate significance is the move from a project-level plan to named suppliers and contractors. For equipment vendors and developers across Southeast Asia, Dầu Tiếng 5 will also test construction and maintenance at scale in a humid, semi-submerged environment, where water management, access, cabling and environmental safeguards are practical delivery issues rather than marketing details.
The project remains forward-looking. Its annual output, commissioning date and DPPA role depend on construction, grid connection and contracting milestones still ahead. Trinasolar's selection is a credible procurement signal, but the stronger proof will come when equipment is delivered, installed and tied to a disclosed commercial-power arrangement.
