S$150m backs Singapore's plan to test materials for industry
A*STAR's planned MARVEL-AI will pair AI models with automated experiments to help companies test materials for semiconductors, energy and chemicals.

In a speech delivered on 27 October, Singapore announced an initial S$150 million government investment in MARVEL-AI, an A*STAR-led platform planned to pair AI models with self-driving laboratories for materials research. It is intended to connect researchers with companies seeking research and validation capacity for industrial use.
The speech identifies a gap between discovering a promising material and getting it ready for industrial use: it must still be synthesised, validated and manufactured at scale. Singapore sees potential applications for AI-assisted materials discovery in semiconductors, energy and chemicals. MARVEL-AI is intended to address the research and testing stages of that gap.
Under the proposed platform, AI models would identify promising materials and design experiments. Self-driving laboratories would then synthesise and test the candidates. That link between a model's proposal and a physical experiment is the practical mechanism described in the announcement.
A*STAR will lead the initiative, with support from Singapore's trade ministry, Enterprise Singapore, the Economic Development Board and the National Research Foundation. The platform is intended to connect researchers with enterprises, including startups and small and medium-sized companies, giving them access to research expertise, infrastructure and validation capability. Participation terms and an opening date were not announced.
